Rediscovering Hope

Rediscovering Hope – centers on the road to Emmaus. The central message is that we can walk through seasons of pain, disappointment, and confusion without recognizing that the risen Jesus is already walking with us. When our eyes are opened to who He is and what God is doing, despair can be replaced with renewed hope.

Sermon Summary

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had experienced the crushing disappointment of watching Jesus—the One they believed was the Messiah—be crucified. They had hoped He would redeem Israel, but now their hopes seemed dead. Their journey to Emmaus represents the experience many of us have when life does not turn out the way we expected: “I was hoping…”

Yet, unbeknownst to them, Jesus Himself joined them on the journey. They were walking with the risen Christ, talking with Him, and listening to Him, but they could not recognize Him. Their expectations, disappointment, and limited understanding prevented them from seeing what was right in front of them.

Jesus then opened the Scriptures to them, showing them that the suffering, death, and resurrection of the Messiah were not a failure of God's plan—they were God's plan. The disciples had been looking for the crown without understanding the cross. Jesus helped them see the entire story of Scripture through the lens of His redemptive work.

When they reached Emmaus, Jesus appeared ready to continue on, but the disciples urged Him to stay. Around the table, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.

Their circumstances had not changed—but their understanding had. The same road that began with sorrow and shattered hopes ended with renewed hope because they encountered the risen Christ.

The resurrection changes the way we see everything. Jesus' death secured forgiveness, but His resurrection assures us that suffering, shame, sorrow, and death do not have the final word. We don't merely believe in a theological doctrine; we follow a living, risen Savior.

The challenge is therefore not simply, “Do you believe that Jesus rose?” but “Are your eyes open to the risen Jesus walking with you today?”

Diggin-Deeper Questions

Where in your life are you currently saying, “I was hoping…”? What disappointment are you carrying that has caused your hope to fade?
Could it be possible that Jesus is present in the middle of your struggle even though you don't recognize Him? What might be keeping you from seeing Him?
Have your expectations of what God should do ever prevented you from seeing what God is actually doing?
Are you looking for the “crown” without being willing to trust God through the “cross”? How do suffering and disappointment challenge your understanding of God's plan?
What would change if you truly believed that Jesus is walking with you through your current circumstances?
The disciples urged Jesus, “Stay with us.” What would it look like for you to invite Jesus more deeply into your home, relationships, decisions, fears, and future?
What do you need God to open your eyes to see? His presence? His promises? Your identity in Christ? His purpose? The hope you have?
Are you seeking Jesus because you want Him—or primarily because you want what He can do for you?
How would you live differently this week if you genuinely believed that sorrow, suffering, and even death do not get the final word?

If Jesus is already walking beside you, but you can't see Him, what might change in your life if you began looking for Him—not only in the moments when everything is going well, but also on the road through your deepest disappointment?

The disciples began their journey with broken hearts and ended it with burning hearts. What happened in between? They encountered the risen Christ—and once their eyes were opened, everything looked different.
