“Finishing Strong Like Paul”
Summary:
Today’s sermon contrasts the lower story—the chaotic, painful, confusing realities of life—with God’s Upper Story, His sovereign plan that continues even when our circumstances look broken. Paul’s life is a vivid example of someone who lived fully aware of the Upper Story, which empowered him to endure extraordinary suffering while finishing his ministry with joy and faithfulness.
1. Paul’s Life Was Dynamic but Difficult
From 2 Corinthians 11:23–29, Paul’s ministry was filled with hardship: prison, beatings, lashes, stoning, shipwrecks, hunger, danger, sleepless nights, and constant concern for the churches. Despite all this, Paul never abandoned his calling. He stayed focused, relentless, and grateful because he never got over the grace he received when Jesus met him on the Damascus road.
2. Paul’s Secret for Enduring Life’s Storms
In Philippians, written from prison, Paul reveals his secret: he relied completely on the strength of Jesus. He understood that his life wasn’t about himself—it was about Christ. His hope was anchored in eternity, which allowed him to face rejection, suffering, and uncertainty with peace. Paul teaches that contentment, joy, and endurance come from knowing who you belong to and viewing your lower story through the lens of heaven.
3. Paul’s Life Ended Well
Though Paul was martyred under Nero, his life ended well because he finished his race faithfully. In 2 Timothy 4:6–8, Paul describes his life as a drink offering poured out for God. He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith—now awaiting his eternal reward. Meanwhile, Nero’s legacy ended in disgrace, proving that true difference makers are the faithful, ordinary believers who give their lives to Jesus.
Conclusion
I challenge you to evaluate your own race: Are you fighting the good fight? Are you finishing the course? Are you running strong? The Book of Acts continues through the local church—so are we giving all we have to Jesus?
